He fled Austria in the face of the 1938 Anschluß — and returned to Vienna a decade later to give a glorious performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 “Resurrection” with the Vienna Philharmonic— an intense, passionate performance that provides a far different interpretation to his famous but comparatively objective early stereo recording with the New York Philharmonic a decade later.
